The Retz forest is the largest area of forest in the Aisne, covering 13,000 hectares. It is mainly planted with beech trees but there are also many other species :oak, Scots pine, firs, spruce, larch. The forest was immortalised by d'Artagnan , the hero of the Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas, a native of Villers-Cotterêts. It was chosen by king François I as a favoured hunting ground and he had a château built here in the 16th century. Explore this royal forest with its literary connections, so vast that you could never see it all !
