The fifth stage runs through the comarcas of La Segarra and La Noguera, the comarca of the rivers as the word “Noguera” means river, an extensive interior land that stretches from the southern slopes of the Sierra del Montsec, where the rivers Noguera Ribagorçana, Noguera Pallaresa and the Segre make their way from west to east, and the western Catalan plains are irrigated by the Urgell canal. In the latter part of the Middle ages this vast territory formed part of the earldom of Urgell and Barcelona. The economy is mainly based on agriculture, forestry and cattle raising (irrigated vegetable gardens and fruit orchards along the Urgell canal and the rest is dry) with a dynamic industrial sector, agricultural activity and more traditionally, hydroelectricity (dams of Camarasa, Sant Llorenç de Montgai, Canelles and Santa Anna).
