In the 12th century, when St. Norbert had just founded the Premonstratensian order in the Forêt de Saint-Gobain, the Bishop of Laon commissioned the building of an abbey for this budding order in Thenailles. At that time, the region was covered in trees, as was the majority of Thiérache, and many places are named after the ancient woodlands..
